Blood on Silk: Farnham
at the James Hockey Gallery, University for the Creative Arts Farnham
26th October – 15th December 2012
Australian artist Fiona Davies has created Blood on Silk: Farnham as a monumental work, which directly addresses the structure of the James Hockey Gallery in an ambitious site-sensitive installation curated by Lesley Millar, Professor of Textile Culture at the University for the Creative Arts.
Working as a semi-permeable membrane, the layers of handmade silk paper both delineate the structure of the gallery space and partially conceal it. Referencing both connective tissues and funeral shrouds, the silk paper forlornly invokes ideas and experiences of absence.
Blood on Silk is a three year cross disciplinary collaboration between Dr. Peter Domachuk, ARC Postdoctoral Fellow, School of Physics, University of Sydney, a writer Dr. Lee Anne Hall, Director, Penrith Regional Art Gallery and a visual artist Fiona Davies. (www.fionadavies.com.au)
Fiona Davies will be speaking about her work during the Transparent Boundaries Conference at UCA Farnham on October 26th.
